Secure Private Network Interconnect Over Satellite

Layer-2 private circuits deliver dedicated point-to-point connectivity for enterprises requiring deterministic network performance, maximum security, and private traffic isolation. Ideal for banking core systems, payment processing, data centre interconnects, and regulated industries with strict compliance requirements.

Layer-2 / Private Circuits

What is Layer-2 / Private Circuits?

What is Layer-2 / Private Circuits?

Layer-2 private circuits create transparent LAN extensions between geographically separated locations as if both sites were connected to the same physical switch. Traffic travels in a dedicated VLAN that never touches the public internet, providing the highest level of security and predictable performance.

Fieldbase delivers Layer-2 circuits using Starlink's LEO satellite constellation combined with our direct peering agreement with SpaceX. We create VLANs from your remote site through satellites to our infrastructure at partner data centres, where you can cross-connect to your own equipment.

Why you need Layer-2 Private Circuits

Performance

  • Latency: 20–40ms (typical)

  • Jitter: <10ms

  • Packet Loss: <0.1% under normal conditions

  • Throughput: Dedicated bandwidth per VLAN based on Starlink plan

  • Physical constraints (building structure, cable routing, equipment placement)

Security

  • AES-256 encryption for all traffic

  • Private VLAN circuits with no internet exposure

  • Traffic never traverses public networks

  • Suitable for PCI-DSS, HIPAA, SOX compliance frameworks

Availability

  • 99.5% uptime SLA (standard tier)

  • 99.7% uptime SLA (premium tier with redundant paths)

  • Optional: Dual-circuit redundancy for mission-critical applications

Integration

  • Seamless integration with MPLS networks

  • Compatible with SD-WAN architectures

  • Supports BGP routing for dynamic failover

  • QoS (Quality of Service) support for traffic prioritization

How Layer-2 Circuits work

01

Network Topology

A typical Layer-2 circuit involves: Site A (Remote Location):

  • Starlink terminal installed on-site

  • Starlink Gateway configured with VLAN tagging

  • Customer equipment (router/switch) connected to gateway

02

Starlink LEO Satellite Network

  • Traffic travels via low-earth orbit satellites

  • Maintains Layer-2 encapsulation throughout satellite hops

  • Encrypted with AES-256

03

SpaceX Ground Station Network

  • Satellites deliver traffic to ground stations

  • Traffic handed off to Fieldbase infrastructure via peering agreement

04

Fieldbase Infrastructure at Data Centre:

  • VLAN received on Fieldbase edge routers/switches

  • Available for cross-connect to customer equipment

05

Site B (Data Centre)

  • Cross-connect (fiber or Cat6) from Fieldbase infrastructure to your rack

  • Your router/switch receives VLAN as if remote site were locally connected

How organizations use it

Banking & Financial Services

Connect remote bank branches to core banking systems using private Layer-2 circuits. Support:

  • ATM connectivity and transaction processing

  • Branch teller systems and customer databases

  • Payment processing and clearing

  • Regulatory compliance (data sovereignty, encryption requirements)

Layer-2 circuits ensure banking traffic never traverses the public internet, reducing exposure to cyber threats and meeting regulatory requirements for private connectivity.

Data Centre Interconnect (DCI)

Establish private connectivity between geographically distributed data centres:

  • Data replication for disaster recovery

  • Virtual machine migration between facilities

  • Storage area network (SAN) extension

  • Management and administrative access

Layer-2 DCI allows you to treat remote data centres as a single logical infrastructure stretching VLANs and subnets across sites.

Deployment process

A streamlined deployment process designed to deliver secure enterprise connectivity with minimal disruption.

01/05

Network Design & Planning

We work with your network team to:

  • Understand current network architecture (MPLS, SD-WAN, VPN)

  • Identify sites requiring Layer-2 connectivity

  • Design VLAN topology and addressing scheme

  • Determine data centre interconnect requirements

  • Plan failover and redundancy (if needed)

02/05

Site Survey & Readiness

For each remote site:

  • Verify Starlink coverage and line-of-sight clearance

  • Identify mounting location and power availability

  • Coordinate with on-site IT team

For data centre: Verify rack space and cross-connect availability. Order cross-connect from data centre provider. Coordinate installation access.

03/05

Equipment Procurement & Configuration

We procure and pre-configure:

  • Starlink Enterprise terminals

  • Network switches and routers (if needed)

  • Cables, mounting hardware, power equipment

  • VLAN configurations and routing policies

04/05

Installation & Commissioning

Our field teams:

  • Install Starlink terminals at remote sites

  • Install data centre cross-connects

  • Configure VLANs and test connectivity

  • Perform end-to-end validation with your network team

  • Document configurations and provide handover materials

05/05

Monitoring & Support

Enable 24/7 NOC monitoring:

  • Real-time circuit status monitoring

  • Latency, jitter, and packet loss tracking

  • Automated alerting for faults or degradation

  • Incident management and escalation

Why choose layer 2 over layer 3?

Use Layer-2 Private Circuits When:

You need transparent LAN extension (remote site appears on same subnet)

Security or compliance requires traffic to bypass the internet entirely

You want to manage all routing and firewalling on your own equipment

Applications require Layer-2 adjacency (broadcast domains, multicast)

You need deterministic, predictable network performance

Use Layer-3 Internet Service When:

You need standard internet access (web, email, cloud software)

You're comfortable using VPN for secure remote access

Simplicity and rapid deployment are priorities

Cost is a primary concern (Layer-3 is typically less expensive)
