Overview

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an internationally recognized safety communications framework mandated by IMO SOLAS for commercial vessels. GMDSS ensures that vessels can send distress alerts, receive maritime safety information, and communicate with rescue coordination centers regardless of location. Compliance isn't optional—vessels operating beyond territorial waters must carry GMDSS-compliant equipment appropriate to their operating area. Failure to comply results in detention, fines, or prohibition from sailing.

Fieldbase provides complete GMDSS solutions: equipment supply from approved manufacturers, professional installation by certified marine electronics engineers, annual surveys and certification, and emergency repair services. We ensure your vessel meets all GMDSS requirements and remains compliant throughout its operational life.

GMDSS Sea Areas

GMDSS requirements vary based on operating area:

Sea Area A1

Within VHF radio range of shore (approximately 20-30 nautical miles from coast). Minimum equipment: VHF-DSC radio, EPIRB, SART.

    Sea Area A2

Beyond A1 but within MF radio range (approximately 100 nautical miles from coast). Additional equipment: MF-DSC radio

      Sea Area A3

Beyond A2 but within INMARSAT satellite coverage (approximately ±70° latitude). Additional equipment: INMARSAT-C or Fleet Broadband terminal.

        Sea Area A4

Polar regions outside INMARSAT coverage. Additional equipment: MF/HF-DSC radio with long-range capability.
